Full Job Description
Capital B is an award-winning local and national news organization reporting for Black communities across the country with a mission of producing excellent civic journalism, engaging communities to build trust, and fighting misinformation. After three years in operation, we have published hundreds of stories, reached hundreds of thousands of people and impacted many lives. Now we are looking for a new, creative and entrepreneurial editor to lead our largest local newsroom, Atlanta, and take our dedicated Atlanta team to the next level of excellence.
The Atlanta editor will be responsible for managing and expanding a team of four reporters, one editor and one community ambassador and overseeing the operations of a hybrid newsroom located in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of South West Atlanta. This is a collaborative role, requiring daily teamwork with peers in other newsrooms, with peers in other parts of the organization and with the organization’s executive leadership. You should be good at big picture thinking, but obsessed with details and hands-on too.
Our ideal candidate is an expert on the politics, economy, culture and lifestyle of Atlanta, has a keen eye for creating distinctive coverage that appeals to natives and newcomers, yearns for journalistic impact and community engagement and relishes the challenges that come with being a leader in an early stage news organization. You should love nurturing talent and have experience turning promising emerging reporters into rock stars.
As a nonprofit organization, we are wedded to our mission and you should be too.
This position reports to Capital B’s executive editor.
Salary: $105,000-$120,000

Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Assign and edit stories, with a community engagement focus
- Manage a growing local newsroom — from hiring and training reporters to planning and executing coverage along with local operational needs
- Develop and maintain editorial calendar
- Communicate editorial strategy and editorial calendar to central editorial and business teams — with regular updates on priorities, challenges, and wins
- Work with central editorial and business teams on reporting collaborations, special projects, events, and other relevant development projects
- Work with executive editor and audience team to conceive of and secure editorial partnerships
- Work with community engagement editor to develop editorial strategy based on community information needs, current events, and Atlanta’s unique characteristics

- Work with audience and PR teams and to increase visibility and discoverability of journalists and journalism.
- In conjunction with community engagement editor and other Atlanta staff members, represent the newsroom at community functions
- Coordinate with central operations and local building management teams to maintain physical office and supplies
What you’ll bring:
- A deep connection to Atlanta’s Black communities and familiarity with the big issues facing Atlanta, and their impact on Black residents

- 5+ years experience assigning and editing stories that shape public conversation and hold public officials accountable
- Effective leader with proven supervisory and team management skills that encourage collaboration, trust, collegiality and innovation
- Experience proactively setting, leading and executing a strategic vision for a wide range of coverage, along with the ability to distill complex public interest topics
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate respectfully and inclusively with colleagues, community partners and other stakeholders
- Big ideas — the ability to occasionally look beyond the daily grind to think about what’s next
- An extreme audience focus — Capital B’s work is not for industry peers or award committees, although it’s a plus if they like it!
- Excellent project management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple deadlines in collaboration with other departments, meet deliverable expectations, as well as plan and prioritize long-term projects and initiatives
- A non-traditional mindset (Traditional journalism experience is an asset, but Capital B is operating under the belief that some of traditional journalism is broken, and you should be, too.)
