We are looking for a dynamic 508 Compliance Specialist to join our team! The 508 Compliance Specialist (508 SME) has ultimate responsibility for ensuring Section 508 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 conformance of strategic communications and curricular products. These include but are not limited to: (a) participant and instructor guides; (b) PowerPoint presentations; (c) miscellaneous “hot tasker” deliverables; (d) job aids; and (e) asynchronous web-based training courses developed with Articulate Storyline 360. In addition to remediating and certifying deliverables, the 508 SME works closely with all members of the team to elevate their skills in applying these concepts on the front end of product development to ensure our team’s products meet and exceed the high standards that our nation’s military community deserve.
This position is contingent upon receiving full approval from the designated stakeholders; currently we are collecting resumes and applications.
In the first 90 days, you will:
- Successful remediation of various types of products for Section 508 WCAG 2.1 compliance.
- Development of job aids for all team members designed to assist them in applying accessibility concepts to all required 508-compliant products
- Review and revise internal and client-facing business rules for validating 508 conformance
Responsibilities
- Remediate all required deliverables for 508 compliance (WCAG 2.1 standards) using screen readers, JAWS, Adobe, CommonLook, and other tools as required
- Have a working knowledge of creating a 508 compliant INDD file to be exported as a 508 accessible .pdf
- Review a web-based training storyline file to ensure and recommend fixes to be certified as 508 accessible
- Review PPT templates as needed and make recommended fixes to PPT file to ensure 508 compliant
- Design and lead synchronous and asynchronous training workshops designed to continuously upskill team members in using 508 best practices
- Create or revise internal and client-facing business rules for efficient and consistently accurate 508 conformance
- Build relationships across the organization to better understand and identify future client solutions and business needs
- Collaborate with all team members (workstream leadership, instructional designers, analysts, graphic designers, tech editors, etc.) to facilitate orderly handoffs and on-time delivery of products
- Track and drive project progress, including early identification of risks and associated mitigation strategies
- Attend client meetings as needed and present relevant updates in a factual, concise manner
- Conduct research and make recommendations on the continuing improvement of accessibility best practices, instructional resources, technologies, and hardware/software
- Ensure version control of files at all times through accurate use of SharePoint folder taxonomy, appropriate file name conventions, and task status tracking using Asana project management software
- Analyzes the customers’ business requirements and identify gaps or discrepancies and follow up as needed to eliminate these gaps
- Builds relationships across the organization to better understand the direction and identify future client solutions and business needs
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) required; Master’s degree (MA/MS) preferred
- Minimum five years’ experience of 508 remediation of educational products, preferably for federal government clients
- Expert in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products
- Working knowledge of asynchronous web-based training development software, such as Articulate Storyline 360.
- Working knowledge of adult learning concepts through instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, and asynchronous modalities.
- Working knowledge of curricular development theory and processes (ADDIE, SAM, etc.)
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel
- Experience with project management applications, such as Asana, SmartSheets, etc.
- Able to obtain a minimum of NACI (National Agency Check with Inquiries) for a Veterans Affairs Public Trust Clearance

- Government contracting experience
- Experience in quality deliverable production and action tracking
- Strong client interaction skills and experience with client facilitation (staff through leadership level)
- Sets priorities and recognizes when re-prioritization is needed based on project and client needs
Desired Skills
- VA and/or VA TAP experience
- Experience with InDesign and/or Storyline a plus
- Graphic design experience a plus
- Government contracting experience
- Experience supporting the military, Veterans Administration, or prior military experience
- Deep knowledge of DoD and VA Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and Military to Civilian Readiness Pathway (M2C Ready) program
